KeywordsCoho salmon = Oncorhynchus kisutch, hatcheries
NotesFound strong negative correlation between Oregon coastal stream productivity for wild coho salmon and the number of hatchery coho released. Urged that hatcheries be sited where "the potential to produce wild salmonids is low," or that amount of hatchery coho in streams with relatively healthy wild runs be decreased. Gives habitat quality indices for coastal streams. Points out cross-breeding of wild and hatchery salmon observed on the Alsea. Notes predation as a significant mortality source on the Alsea, particularly avian predators, primarily cormorants. Notes reduction in harbor seal predation on the Alsea when hatchery production cut. The Alsea had the lowest production of wild coho, yet had the highest number of hatchery smolts released.
