KeywordsAlsea Bay, commercial fisheries - shellfish, Dungeness crab = Metacarcinus magister (Cancer magister), natural resource management
NotesDiscusses a problem unique to Alsea Bay relating to the legal size of Dungeness crabs for harvesting. "The practice of landing crabs which have been "backed" (backs, entrails, and gills removed, and the carcass broken in half) is not widespread, but is peculiar to the Alsea Bay crab fishery." (p.28) The law enforcement officials needed to know what crabs were legal, based on the halves made available. Discusses various crab measurements in an attempt to figure out how to tell the legal crabs from the "backed" crabs available.
