NotesThe type of vegetation along a stream bank influences the stream’s ecosystem. Coniferous vegetation provides logs and year-long shade. Deciduous vegetation supplies important nutrients to streams and supports aquatic invertebrate populations. While Oregon’s current forest management practices stress conifer-dominated riparian areas, the authors suggest that each type of vegetation makes valuable contributions to its streams, and that the ecosystems might benefit from occasional interruptions of different streamside vegetation types.
