NotesNice brief description of the Alsea Valley in 1890, including the local economy, town sites, etc. Recommends against development of the harbor. Captain Thomas W. Symons of the Corps of Engineers observed, "It would seem that the Alsea country should utilize the improved harbor of Yaquina with its railroad and steamship facilities for the development of its own resources rather than that the Government should duplicate the Yaquina improvement works at the Alsea, at an expense of over $500,000."
