NotesDescribes improvements made on Alsea River from "The Forks" of the Alsea (31 miles upriver) to the head of tidewater. This work, completed September 14, 1897, provided "a high-water boat channel varying in width from 20 to 50 feet, clear of obstructions above the plane of low water, whichmay be run with comparative safety on any ordinary rise.""The method of navigation on the river, as described in previous reports, is by means of rough scows 15 to 40 feet in length and 5 to 10 feet in width, having a loaded draft of from 12 to 18 inches. These are loaded at "The Forks" during time of freshets with the produce of the upper valley, such as wheat, flour, bacon, lumber, etc., and floated to Waldport, at the mouth of the river, the run under favorable conditions being made in about ten hours." No further improvement recommended. Includes folding map. in Google Books.
