NotesBrief news item. “Governor West of Oregon has been petitioned by gillnet fishermen of Waldport, Ore., asking that steps be taken to prevent seine fishing in Alsea Bay. F. C. Barnes of Portland built a new cannery at Waldport early in the season and has been paying 3 ½ cents for Chinooks, attracting about 40 gillnet fishing boats. S. Elmore & Co., fearing a short supply for their Waldport cannery, put a seining crew to work, but the gillnetters deliberately “corked” the seines by continuously drifting their gillnets across the seining waters when the tide is right for seining.”
