NotesThis interesting Congressional document describes much of the economic and physical situation of the upper Alsea River valley near the North and South forks in the early 1890s. The authors describe a burned-over landscape with scattered stands of timber that survived the great forest fires. Roads were terrible. In the winter, residents used the river to ship produce downstream in disposable flatboats or scows. The Chief of Engineers recommended a survey and removal of rocks and overhanging vegetation to improve river traffic for a cost of about $1,000. Serial Set issue 3103. Available in Google Books.
